Dane Balia 1 2 It’s not specific to browsers though, I guess it’s remotely curious that they all appear to do it Not all programming languages support garbage collection.
And, you can easily have memory leaks even in those languages that do have it. Stackoverflow and this site probably have lots of information about why that is true.
Why do any programmes leak memory! Its not as if browser are a special case or for that matter simple. Modern browsers are probably the most complex piece of user orientated software on a home computer. Not only do they need to understand correctly formatted code but also badly formatted code and still provide a reasonable interpretation.
The language itself is not the cause. It is always the developer who should be held responsible for memory leaks. There are lots of features and techniques in not garbage-collected languages that facilitate efficient memory management.
And let’s not forget that garbage-collected languages have their runtimes written in not garbage-collected ones. What do you mean by “appears as plain as day”? Did you use some leak-detection tool on web browsers?
Non-leaks Finally there are a range of caching features that mean the browser’s process will grow in scope while using it. You do not need to remember to deallocate anymore than you would in a garbage collected language like Java.
But of course you must remember to set up your destructor and use smart pointers to get that benefit. The prep work is manual, but the deallocation is automatic. Joeri can you put some code snippet to demonstrate memory leak while using closures?

But why does it use up so much RAM, especially compared to other browsers? And what can you do to keep it in check? Chrome is one of the fastest browsers Which Browser Is Best?
Firefox Which Browser Is Best? Firefox The browser you’re using right now may not be the best one for you. The browser arena changes so frequently that your conclusions from comparisons made last year may be completely wrong this year.
Read More out there, but it needs a lot of resources to take that title. To understand why Chrome uses so much memory, you need to understand a bit about what makes Chrome different from other browsers.
This is called process isolation, and it prevents one process from writing to another one. This is why you see a ton of different entries for Chrome when you open up Task Manager or Activity Monitor on your computer.
Each of these processes only uses a small amount of memory, but when you add them up, the load can be very high. By running each process separately, if one of them crashes, the entire browser remains stable.
Sometimes a plugin will fail, for example, and that will require that you refresh the tab. If every tab and plugin was run in the same process, it could require that you close and reopen the whole browser, instead of just the tab.
This comes with some security benefits, however, much like sandboxing or using a virtual machine do. In addition to the tabs, plugins, and extensions, a few other processes also use RAM, with pre-rendering being a notable example.
Read Moreclearing out your running processes might actually slow things down. Much like the Windows Task Manager, you can use this window to see which tabs and extensions are using the most memory and close them to free up some space.
Google is now rolling out major changes to the browser that fix memory problems and actively discards unused tabs. You can also disable extensions that are using a lot of power, or add a few extensions that will help you manage the amount of resources Is Chrome Hogging All Your RAM?
Personally, I think both browsers are great, but have been using Firefox more Read More that Chrome is using. Some solutions did help improve Chrome a little, but there was only one thing that fixed the problem. Here are the eight best tweaks that you can make today.
Eternal favorites Chrome and Firefox can give you flexibility, but not without some heavy compromises. Here’s why you should be using it. How do you find Chrome? Does it use up all of your RAM?
Or is it pretty reasonable in how many resources it consumes? Have you tried solving the problem, or is it still happening? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below! Your email address will not be published.
By running each process separately, if one of them crashes, the entire browser remains stable It uses so much resources, here lately it’s been freezing and crashing.
I have to keep clearing the cache after I was a few videos so that it won’t crash. As of late, it’s been a piece of Had this high usage problem with Google chrome stable since upgrade to fedora Must be a problem with the installation process of Google-Chrome on Linux systems running more than one alternate desktops.
I have multiple desktops install i. Just opening Chrome uses mb on my 6 Gb machine. I usually have 10 or so tabs open, but when total memory usage from Chrome starts to exceed 2Gb, then it bogs down and stops working.
Closing tabs does not release hardly any memory, even chrome browser 10 5 34 2 leak you close them all. I have to shut off Chrome completely, and then the memory is released.
Not sure what to do, except try another browser. I love the “stability and speed” part. If an application freezes your system or is slow as hell due to it having eaten up all of your RAM and a huge chunk of your swap if you are on Linux how the hell is it stable and fast?!?!?!?!?!
Strange you all have problems with memory management, I am on an old Dell Latitude E with 2 GB ram and still be able to have 10 tabs open and even update my system and even working on documents plus opening a couple of SSH sessions without a problem or interruptions, start to get in trouble when opening this site as it uses 1 GB of ram which is very much, maybe you can reconfigure the site to use less memory.
This is not a Chrome issue this is an issue of your site. This didn’t solve my Chrome memory issue which it came up on the search engine listings to accomplish. It did promote other browsers. What comes around goes around, even in the smallest ways.
Chrome uses way more memory than Seamonkey. I get the unable to open page bacause of memory issues when I only have 4 tabs open. I planned to go over to chrome beacuse of the syncing of my bookmarks etc. I don’t know a whole lot about Seamonkey, but if it’s 5 times more efficient on your computer, it definitely seems worth looking into!
How old is your computer? How much memory do you have? I use Chrome like a crazy person. I open up tabs many. I should use firefox but then the entire mess crashes. Now I know why. Chrome IS a faster browser!
But if you work the way I do, make sure you have enough ram to keep it happy. I had an old system about 10 years old and would open tabs to fill up my screen as I was writing.
One page, usually some clickbait thing would always end up hanging and then it would crash everything else I was working on. I built a new system with 16 gigs of ram and just this morning had 13 tabs open.
I saw the “Chrome has run out of memory. Annnnnd here we are now: I will still use Chrome, and still use way way too many open tabs. I wonder if there’s some sort of configuration in your computer that’s not letting it use a lot of memory.
That’s a huge amount of space to be used up by a browser, even one like Chrome. Ah, that’s an interesting point. I’d check to make sure you’re using the bit version and try again. It pretty much brings my 16Gb chrome browser 10 5 34 2 leak to it’s knees.
It uses so much RAM that I cannot have my other apps running while doing research. I have 8GB and I can run a lot of other stuff in conjunction with a lot of tabs. But follow these tips and see what happens!
So what’s the chrome browser 10 5 34 2 leak of having fastest browser if it bring my computer to it’s knee and ultimately the computer become unusable. Yeah, I only have a paltry 32 GB, and chrome brings down my system.
To Dann, it sounds like you need to stop ass-uming. After all, according to Xerox, I was the first person on earth to use a PC to massage data from multiple mainframe platforms, so yeah, I kinda know how the stuff works.
Google made a silly design decision. Oh wow, you mean Google, built on a search engine, isn’t Microsoft. Make us go fast Geordi. Yeah, we like to go fast As predicted in Tron, the computer are now doing the thinking for us.
The Great Suspender works just great! I also use One Tab to store my tabs and easily get them back when I want, even from days ago. That sounds cool too.
I’ve been running an absolutely ridiculous number of tabs lately, so maybe I’ll try it! I’ve been trying to limit my tab usage, but that’s been a struggle. I used to use the great suspender and one tab as well. Then I switched to Tab Suspender https: Couple that with one tab and your memory goes way down.
You always need to be mindful of other things as well though, like background processes that will remain open even when you close Chrome Google Hangouts extension, for example as they can keep Chrome in a partially awake state and adversely affect your resources.
You’ve done it too. If I can keep all that going and still play Kerbal Space Program I’ve never seen a game eat so much memory It’s largely about keeping an eye on the kinds of things you have loaded in your tabs.
If you aren’t blocking ads, every one of those is also consuming memory too, and that is one of the easier things to deal with.

Firefox was adopted rapidly, with million downloads in its first year of availability. Firefox continued to heavily market itself by releasing a marketing portal dubbed “Spread Firefox” SFX on September 12, , It debuted along with the Firefox Preview Release, creating a centralized space for the discussion of various marketing techniques.
The site lists the top referrers. As a part of the Spread Firefox campaign, there was an attempt to break the world download record with the release of Firefox 3. Three months later, in May , Mozilla officially closed Spread Firefox.
Mozilla wrote that “there are currently plans to create a new iteration of this website [Spread Firefox] at a later date. In celebration of the third anniversary of the founding of the Mozilla Foundation , the “World Firefox Day” campaign was established on July 15, , and ran until September 15, The Firefox community has also engaged in the promotion of their web browser.
Other initiatives include Live Chat, a service Mozilla launched in that allowed users to seek technical support from volunteers. The extension was pushed automatically to Firefox users in the United States via a system typically used for enabling “experiments” for user testing, but was disabled by default unless explicitly activated to participate in the ARG.
Mozilla responded to the controversy, stating that the promotion was intended to be a “fun and unique” way for fans to engage with the series, but that the distribution practices “did not meet the standards to which we hold ourselves, causing concern that was surfaced through our Firefox community”.
The organization posted the extension to its add-ons repository, as well as a link to its source code, and stated that it would be re-evaluating its practices. In December , Internet Week ran an article in which many readers reported high memory usage in Firefox 1.
Softpedia noted that Firefox 1. IE 6 launched more swiftly than Firefox 1. As a workaround for the issue, a preloader application was created that loaded components of Firefox on startup, similar to Internet Explorer.
They concluded that Firefox 3. They also concluded that Firefox 3. Tom’s Hardware summarized their tests into four categories: Performance, Efficiency, Reliability, and Conformance. In the efficiency tests, Tom’s Hardware tested memory usage and management.
In this category, it determined that Firefox was only “acceptable” at performing light memory usage, while it was “strong” at performing heavy memory usage. In the reliability category, Firefox performed a “strong” amount of proper page loads.
Firefox also scored the highest on the “non-performance” index, which measured memory efficiency, reliability, security, and standards conformance, finishing substantially ahead of Chrome, the runner-up.
Tom’s Hardware concluded by declaring Firefox the “sound” winner of the performance benchmarks. In January , a benchmark testing the memory usage of Firefox 29, Google Chrome 34, and Internet Explorer 11 indicated that Firefox used the least memory when a substantial number of tabs were open.
In benchmark testing in early on a “high-end” Windows machine, comparing Microsoft Edge , Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, and Opera, Firefox achieved the highest score on three of the seven tests.
Edge took overall first place on the Jetstream and Octane benchmarks. Downloads have continued at an increasing rate since Firefox 1. Firefox was the second-most used web browser until November , when Google Chrome surpassed it.
