That leaves us with the problem of deciphering the content of the inscriptions if we know the writing system or have already worked out how it works. If we know a closely related ancient language to the one in the inscriptions, then there’s no problem.

We translate what we can recognise, and we’re left with gaps and question marks we can work on. Suppose, though, that it isn’t obviously related to anything we know? One thing we could do is think the inscriptions look like a language we happen to know and try to make up some sort of story that we imagine the inscription might be telling, by looking for words in that particular language that we know look similar to a meaning we want to supply.

This is a hare-brained way of going about it, of course. The inscriptions will probably be a couple of thousand years old, and the one thing we can be certain of is that the text will NOT look like ANY modern language, even one it’s related to, because the natural changes that inevitably take place in course of a couple of thousand years will make any text unrecognisable to speakers of any modern language that happens to be related to our texts.

Sadly, the internet is full of such moronic decipherment claims, more often than not about Etruscan, and the perpetrator is often some weirdo with a nationalist axe to grind, or who thinks that “official” archaeological theories based on scientific methods are all nonsense.

So, how should we decipher a text in an unknown language? First off, if we understand the writing system, we’re not actually deciphering, we’re interpreting, and we need to look for clues to the meanings of the words.

There may be some shortcuts or clues that will help with particular texts or particular words. The extent to which the following clues are available will vary according to the language. The ones given here have all helped in varying degrees to make progress with Etruscan, where we have long understood the writing system, and have a vast repertory of over texts, the longest of which contains readable words.

These are not much help in the case of Etruscan. Etruscan is not the complete isolate it is often described as being: Raetic and Lemnian, which are much less amply attested than Etruscan itself.

However, knowledge of these languages and thus how they developed and separated from one another has helped a number of Etruscologists, particularly those outside Italy, to conclude that the likely homeland of the common ancestor of this small family of languages was ancient Anatolia.

In Etruscan’s case a number of ancient Greek or Roman writers have mentioned a total of 57 words and one phrase which they allege to be Etruscan vocabulary, together with their translations.

However, we have no guarantee of the accuracy of their comments. Some of the words do appear in Etruscan texts and appear to have the meanings suggested, although the spelling is often not quite the same.

Other ancient glosses from classical authors such as the Etruscan names for some herbs and animals do not appear among the Etruscan texts that survive, but if we ever do find an Etruscan text with a word which is a bit like ” arimos ” or ” mutuka ” in it, then one of the first things we will do is see if ” monkey ” or ” thyme ” could fit into a translation of the text.

There are not very many bilingual texts where one of the languages is Etruscan, and these are all very short, mostly epitaphs or dedications in Latin and Etruscan.

Even if we have a bilingual inscription, the text in the known language may not translate the unknown language. We happen to understand the Etruscan anyway: These are texts in different languages not on the same artefact, but found together and with similar contents.

In Etruscan’s case the most notable of these are the Pyrgi golden tablets found in , two in Etruscan and one in Phoenician, the latter a language we do understand. These texts are relatively short, referring to the opening of a temple, but from them scholars concluded definitively that Etruscan ” ci ” meant ” three “, which allowed conclusions about most of the other numbers in Etruscan below to fall into place.

How do archeologists decipher scripts of ancient civilizations without having any prior knowledge about their languages? Which are the ancient languages that are yet to be deciphered?

What is Decipher Technology all about? Which are the ancient languages of the world? The Rosetta Stone cracked Egyptian hieroglyphs, since it included Greek. Other old languages and writing yields to similar methods, work out what it probably means.

Not all has been cracked. Linear A remains an enigma. Recurring symbols in the Indus Valley civilisation are mysterious and it is disputed if it was a full written language. Thank you for your feedback!

I like the fact that you can also access a thesaurus easily enough when using this tool. I found no real down side to this program except that the Tray Dictionary I downloaded is easier to access and is also an excellent dictionary.

All in all, I like dictionary. It is very user friendly, is an excellent reference source, and also allows access to a thesaurus. I use it quite a bit, but I do find that my Tray Dictionary is easier to access and just as good of a reference library.

I haven’t found the Tray Dictionary as versatile in that it does not provide access to a thesaurus but, as a dictionary I use my Tray dictionary more often. Login or create an account to post a review.
