Ponent can’t defeat in 1v1 online combat. It made a splash on first announcement during E3 2016 and looks like it could be an early contender for indie smash hit of the year. Here’s an equally dark follow-up and this time it’s to the rather good Sunless Sea. Failbetter went back to Kickstarter for this one and did exceptionally well. Fully funded within four hours, Sunless Skies will almost certainly be a total pleasure to fans of the studio. There’s plenty of information over on the Kickstarter and a development roadmap points to early access in late 2017.Konami are apparently upgrading the PC version of their football game massively this year and making PC the place to play PES 18. Previously, it’s been a fairly poor port of the previous generation (360, PS3 etc.) version, meaning crappy graphics and poor controls.2014’s Divinity: Original Sin was one of best classic RPGs made in recent years, with plenty of charm, depth, and challenge to spare. Larian Studios’ follow up promises the same respect for player choices, new origin stories, a revamped crafting system, and addictive competitive party elements.

And we can attest to all of this following our Original Sin II hands-on. They’re even making a D D mode. Here’s what Arkane are doing next: more Dishonored. In what has taken a couple of games to build up to, you’ll be hunting down the Outsider as some side characters from Dishonored 2. He has, presumably, been an extremely naughty boy. It’s Marvel, baby! Bringing back mechanics from older Vs. games like the Infinity Stones and 2v2 combat, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite hopes to please both Marvel veterans and new players.

The full character list leak is looking more and more likely by the day, too. More elves, more lizards, and probably some Skaven are coming to the second part of the Total War: Warhammer trilogy. That, plus it’ll clamp onto the original, and has a story campaign and loads of tweaks.

The football returns for another year, with Christiano Ronaldo, logos, and better mo-cap of famous players. There’s also new crowd tech and better stadiums – FIFA 18 looks like a proper upgrade.

You probably already know if you’re going to buy it or not, though. The most intriguing art style in development, Cuphead bases its looks on early 1900s cartoon animation, and its play on a co-op version of Mega Man. How that all combines is the question, and its taken its time getting here – hopefully it can live up to its own design.

Already in Early Access and making quite a stormer of it, We Happy Few aims to mix BioShock and survival games into, presumably, some sort of world-devouring omni-game. Set in an alternate universe where drugs are all that keep the British population in check, it’s horror, humour, survival, and story all wrapped into one. There’s also going to be a We Happy Few film, for some reason. Long awaited remake of a cult-classic, Outcast: Second Contact is one of several games hitting this year (not all on our platform, sadly) that many never thought they would see. Despite failing a Kickstarter several years ago, funding was acquired and the game is being made – Matt even got to see it at Gamescom.

The vrooms return for another year, bringing exceptional beauty to half-arcadey, half-not racing. Theres a lot more character design this time with loads of cosmetic items for both driver and car. The focus is still very much on what you drive, though: 700 to choose from in all. The sequel to the greatest 7/10 of all time looks like it’s going to continue that theme, with an added dose of WWE-style run-ins and dragons.

Dragons! Hooray.

It’s even further from anything approaching LOTR canon these days, but the Nemesis system is back with avengeance. The even-spookier follow-up to the Resident Evil-inspired The Evil Within, the sequel promises just as much mad violence and weird stuff happening.

You probably won’t glean much from the cinematic trailer beyond that everything’s gone wrong again, but here’s some gameplay to tide you over. Like all of Bethesda’s projects, it’s out very soon. Following four separate delays, Ubisoft have finally decided a release date for South Park: The Fractured But Whole. As the children of South Park move from high fantasy to superheroes, it’s up to the New Kid to master his powers of flatulence to save the town from evil. Nice to see that South Park has gone high-brow after all these years. Here we have a full-on remake of the 2000 AD adaption Rogue Trooper. Creators, and now IP owners, Rebellion (they do Sniper Elite, shooter fans) were keeping it very under wraps, releasing entire trailers without showing even the main character.

We now know plenty more. Not content with being a dominant force in console gaming for the better part of three years, Destiny’s sequel is headed to the PC. Expect jokes, loot, guns, and probably not Peter Dinklage – almost certainly the biggest launch of the year, here’s everything we know about the Destiny 2 on PC. BJ is back again, and there are still so, so many Nazis to kill. This time he’s headed to America to liberate it before switchover day – when English will be abolished as a world language. With something to prove on just how mad a game you can make in 2017, we won’t have long to wait to find out just how silly it gets. Then they’ll get right to work on Wolfenstein 3.After taking a break, Assassin’s Creed is back, in Egypt, and long before any of the other games were set. It’s got an RPG system now, and a real combat system that operates more like Dark Souls. Like Black Flag, by the same devs, it wants to mix up the formula to create a massive success.

Will it work? Returning to the well-trodden battlefields of World War II, the latest Call of Duty hopes to take the series back to what made it such a success. With Zombies also going back to its roots, expectations are high for this installment to put Call of Duty back on track. How do you make explosions even more explosive?

You get the cloud to compute them. That’s the plan for Crackdown 3, the seven-years-late sequel to one of the Xbox’s most popular games. Destructible environments in a sandbox city are the setup, but beyond that we haven’t seen much more since the reveal in 2015.The Fast Furious game we deserve – hopefully. Need for Speed Payback is all chaos, all cars, all the time, with about as much crashing and bashing as the best burnouts and a plot straight out of Hollywood.

Exactly how all that comes together without the acting talents of The Rock we don’t yet know. Not to be confused with Star Wars Battlefront II (2005), this Battlefront II (2017) plans to fix every problem the galactic republic of videogame players had with the first attempt. There’s a single-player campaign, there are multiple eras, there’s no season pass, and everything will presumably smell of space roses. It looks pretty good so far. The first game for feels-central developer Dontnod to release after Life is Strange is, obviously, about consuming the flesh of the living for sustenance.

Vampyr casts you as a recently-vampirised doctor in 1918, just as Spanish Flu is really starting to mess Europe up. London is the setting, dark is the tone, and surviving is the plan, while trying not to destroy all sense of civilisation in Britain’s capital. Good luck. Well, it’s happening.

A massively successful Kickstarter, some amount of Sony money and an almost bottomless pile of hype. It’s estimated for the end of 2017, but we’d be surprised if it doesn’t slip into the year after – or even further. Some, however, will wait however long they need to. After distilling the merits of their turn-based tactical shooter into the purist sports strategy of Frozen Cortex, Mode 7 Games have returned to the Synapse series with a view to expand.

They’ll retain the waypoint system that evokes early Rainbow Six, but move the action outside those familiar office complexes in favour of “open world tactics.” However that manifests itself, it’ll be a huge departure from the taut, two-player maps of the original Frozen Synapse.

Without a doubt the most wildly ambitious game in a long time, Star Citizen aims to be the ultimate space exploration experience. Taking to the skies in one of numerous ridiculously detailed craft, you’ll be able to engage in military service, become a reputable trader of goods, live the life of a smuggler, or become a universe-famous race pilot. If it ever gets finished, of course.

Squadron 42, the single-player component, is supposed to be out this year. But also last year. After a well-received reveal at The Game Awards 2016, Dauntless entered a period of hibernation while the brains behind it put the free-to-play Monster Hunter-esque game together. After good showings at PAX and other shows, and with a growing community, it’s got a shot to be one of the bigger games of the year. Ruiner is an ultraviolent isometric action shooter based on 1988’s sci-fi anime Akira. Think Hotline Miami if it was a ruby-tinted dystopia.

I know, right? Check out Jordan’s hands-on with Ruiner for more – he called it “a bold and bloody stampede through a cyberpunk city that’s driven entirely by kineticism,” which sounds alright to us. It’s due late this year. XCOM’s indie cousin takes a lot from the original games – differentiating it from the smaller squad sizes of the modern-day efforts. Xenonauts 2 was announced with a splash page and little else in 2016, and has had work done on it quietly ever since. But builds are now readily ava
